So one of my favorite shows is Ghost Adventures on the travel channel. So there is one of the members of the ghost group named Aaron who always makes me laugh. So I seen him laugh on this one episode and thought I sketch him out. I wasn't trying for an exact likeness of him just wanted to exaggerate his laughter on two of the sketches. Just wanted to stay loose and hopefully get some energy off of his smile and laugh.

Was sketching this out but my intentions were not to draw a Ariel or little mermaid figure...but in the end I made it kinda like her minus the fin of a mermaid. Was thinking about little Rascals today and which one of them to sketch. One of my fondest memories of watching reruns of Old episodes was the one with Chubs and Mrs. Crabtree. Man looking at these episodes really shows how times have changed. But anyways found a cool image of Chubs thought it would be cool to draw him for my day 2 sketch in my style. Might keep going with the Lil Rascals theme this week.

Day 1Happy March everyone! Well a talented artist and cartoonist Cedric Hohnstadt http://cedrichohnstadt.wordpress.com/ started up this great idea to do a sketchbook for the month of March and to try and post up a sketch or sketches for each day of this month. So going to try my hand and join in on the fun. I'm not going to worry about if my drawing looks good or not just going to be spontaneous and draw what comes to mind. It's our sketchbooks and this is where all the fun stuff happens. So since over the weekend I was watching Spartacus Gods of the Arena the first thing that popped to mind is why not sketch out some Gladiators.

If anyone wants to join in on the fun have a go at it and let's see if we can complete the whole month with a page of sketches for each day.

Through the Years

Hi everyone! Is everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving next week ready?? I know I'm not. Time fly's when your having fun. Sorry for the cropped scan but here's a sketch of a character called Kidd Bonzai. It was created by a good friend and super talented guy Derek Fridolfs. This character has been through so many changes over the years that I thought it was time to do another sketch of him. I also placed at the bottom some drawings of what he's looked like over the past 8 years.

The first image from 2002 was a double spread cover for the actual comic that was going to be put out by APcomics. Unfortunately it eventually never saw the light of day and ever since has been in Limbo. So technically this was Kidds first official look and as you can tell over the years I tried different designs. You can also see how the more we draw the better we get and learn from our mistakes. Heck maybe next week or in months I'll look at the new drawing and say Yuck!! What was I thinking. This drawing sucks! Lol. As artists we are always the hardest on ourselves. Maybe once I find the disk that held a lot of the pages for the book I'll post them up here.

Hi everyone. Here's a couple of sketches of people I seen today and yesteday on the street that were just to cooky to pass up and not sketch them out. I've really learned my lesson on always keeping a pocket sketchbook wherever I go. You just never know who you might see. The 2nd sketch was a lady who I seen crossing the street and she had her jacket over her head and pulling it down so her hair would not blow in the wind. Was funny watching her cross the street walking all cool. Ha!

Of late I haven't drawn much Superhero stuff (and I'm a comic artist by profession....so go figure on that..ha!) so was just sketching out my take of Spiderman's evil enemy the Rhino, but thought something was missing so sketched up a little girl and pasted her in with the Rhino drawing. Happy Monday!! Thought today I kinda do something different and sketch up some old trees that really have no leafs and pretty much down right weird looking. Wanted to play with shapes and didn't care in the end what it looked like. Oh sorry about the writing underneath the tree sketches. I usually just jot down what pencil I used for that particular sketch just in case I prefer a certain look or feel of that particular tool. Also thought I throw up a few comp. drawings. Looking at these over again I know I could and should be pushing this even more. The joy or being an artist and learning as we go.

Hi Everyone. Hope everyone is well. I'm getting ready to head out for the San Diego Comic con that starts tomorrow. Technically tonight but that's more of a preview night. It's insane over there now compared to let's say 5 to 10 years ago. But it's fun to see fellow artists and say Howdy and talk shop as well as purchase some goodies as well. By the time I get back I'll be more broke them I'm already am. For anyone else heading out there this weekend Have a blast!!

On another note I thought it would be cool to post a handout I had that was given to me a number of years ago for a Gesture drawing for animation class that I took with instructor and animator Diano Coco. The class was awesome and Diana was a great teacher. So hopefully this handout will come in handy for anyone who wants to right click and save

Also last thing just throwing some fun little doodles that I did in my sketchy book.

Okay not really. Just didn't know what to put for a title. Played a game of golf yesterday and seen this big guy on another hole going to putt. He stood out to me so much due to his size and the way he was putting and yes he made the shot. As for the robot..well that was just for fun since tomorrow I'm going to go catch Iron Man 2. So why not call this little robot IRON LAD. I know it's kinda a Cheesy name but I think it works. The last little drawing is from when I was watching the mini series The Pacific and thought I would use my sketchbook and jot down a couple of scenes from the Show. Well once again I've been lagging with posts. Not that I have had a lot of control of that for various reasons but I'm hoping the month of May will bring a different tune. So thought I would post some sketches that I doodle when I'm driving. Not that I'm driving and drawing....well okay maybe once or twice I might have tried. But usually I try to look for people walking down the sidewalk and try to memory sketch them once I come to a stop sign and quickly sketch them out before the light turns green. A lot of fun to do but hate it when the light turns green to fast by the time I pick up my pocket sketchbook and then I lose that mental picture at the moment. But eventually that certain person sticks in my head and I'll sketch them out at home. Always nice to do all these little doodles of people because you just never know when you can use these sketches for certain projects or jobs.

I was trying out a new sketchbook just to see how the paper would react to a watercolor wash. I think it's okay. Some pro's and cons. I'm always on the hunt for new sketchbooks. Hi everyone. Talk about being out of commission. These past weeks have been crazy. Been helping my grandparents move out of their house of 42 years and you can imagine trying to box and clean 42 years of belongings and trash. But now that their all moved and doing well it's time to get back to blogging.

Hey Everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates of late. Hope everyone is doing well and again a million thanks to you all for taking the time to stop by and post a comment.

Well thought I'd post some life or figure drawings. I wanted to post these ones since these are my more loose and spontaneous sketches. I know a lot of us like are sketches to be nice a clean looking and I'm always guilty of that but I'm really trying to make a conscious effort to not think about that and just be loose and quick and the drawings will have a life of their own once done. So go crazy and be loose and spontaneous and not worry if a certain part of the body looks right or wrong it's all about the energy and the main thing is to have fun. I know we all do or else we wouldn't be doing these bloggers. Our Sketchbook drawings should be raw with energy. So here's a few of my loose stuff in pen (always the best to use since it keeps you form erasing a line you might not like) Looking back at these sketches I know I could have pushed the poses even more...but hey that's how we learn right?

Oh and on a side not if you have not picked it up already Mark McDonnells book "The art and feel of making it real" Is a excellent book about gesture and making our sketches tell a story. Highly recommend it and it's a great addition to every artist library. I love it.

Here's an observational drawing of this heavy set crossing guard I seen while I was stopped at a signal. He was sitting on the curb waiting for kids to come by so he could do his duty. The funny thing was when kids did show up he still just sat there while holding up the stop sign as opposed to walking over to the middle of the crosswalk to help the kids and parents crossover. Sheesh!

So I thought what if a Gardner actually seen the leafs as a giant Leaf monster and had to use his blower to destroy it and save the day!! I sketched the 1st page out while waiting at the Car Wash. Thought one of the guys drying the cars looked fun to draw. I might have exaggerated his porportions a bit but it's all in fun. The 2nd drawing I did when I got home. Don't know who I initially trying to draw so I just added a few things to kinda make him look like DC comics Red Tornado. I know his look is not exact but I tried to remember the best as I could costume wise.

Was raining here in So. Cal early last week which is hard to believe since a couple of days later it was in the 90's. Unbelievable. Anyways I seen this homeless man near a freeway entrance braving the rain with a red plastic tarp trying to cover himself up with it. I never got a really good look at his face since I was driving at the moment but the little glance I did get was just enough for me to remember and get this memory sketch down before I forget.

Here's a page of sketches that are from my Moleskine Notebook. Alot of the drawings that I've posted on my blog are from the same sketchbook and other drawings are from other books I carry around. But I really digg the x-large notebook softcover. It takes my pencil and pen lines like butter and it's great since most of the time I like to do quick sketches and really try to focus on movement even if it doesn't make any sense. heh

I'm trying to learn to add watercolors to my sketches and I've been inspired my Alina Chau's work so thought I'd throw in some watercolors on it.

Here was a concept sketch of Mickey that I had done for a supposed game. I guess it got put on the back burner but all I know is that I had to do some concepts of Mickey and that the main focus is that his body would be ink. Kinda like a Venom type feel. Since the game was more for teens and up they wanted a more edgier looking Mickey. So pretty much this is one of the things I came up with.

I tend to like to sketch out people that have more mass to them. I think there is so much you can add to it with squash and stretch and weight. I have alot to learn on the subject but it's always fun to learn on paper.

Mom's Spinach Myth

Well I'm sure a number of us were told that eating our Spinach would give us muscles like Popeye. Well that's all a myth and unfortunately I had to learn that the hard way when I was a kid. I mean when Popeye ate some it looked all cool and crunchy but man that's what I get for thinking spinach looked and tasted great like the cartoons. So all I have to say about eating spinach to be like Popeye.........NUTS!! Thanks mom for traumatizing my lil heart with that myth.

I drew this out before I forget. I was at the LA county Fair on Fri. and seen this guy in the parking lot. I tried to remember enough of him to sketch him out since then. One thing that really stood out to me was his really short shorts. lol. I will kick myself over and over again because I forgot my pocket sketchbook in the car!!! There was so many people that would have been great to doodle in my book. It was like a buffet for artists. Arrrggggg!!! How could I forget it!! Uggg. I will now continue to kick myself in the you know where.

Tree Sketches

Wanted to play around with some tree sketches. Wanted to show more mass on them. There's so many things to master as an artist or at least get a grasp on so I thought I'd try something out of the norm and doodle some tress. A few I tried in watercolor (another thing I'm learning to try to do) and since I was drawing those trees I might as well throw in an Ent while I was at it.

The Imagination Of A Child

Last night my lil 7yr old was doodling around and I chuckle to myself seeing him in me when I was drawing at his age. I Always had these cool ideas even though they sometimes made no sense but in Kids eyes they are the coolest characters in the world and their imagination just runs with a certain drawing. I thought it would be cool to draw out my lil guys 2 characters and surprise him with the sketch later today. I have no clue what or who they are all I know is one of them is a bunch of webs. lol. Ahhh to be a kid again...hey wait were all kids when we have fun drawing and that's the way it should always be no matter how old or young we are.

Well Technically this is me but not me so let's say it's kinda like my alter ego as a kid. I'm going to be posting in the future some sketches of this little guy (me) and put him into scenes that I remember of me growing up when I was young and all the cool and fun and sad moments of my life's journey. Kinda like me telling a story of things that actually happened but in pictures with this little guy. Okay let's just call it Therapy then. lol

Going Postal

Well my initial idea for drawing a postal worker was to draw out different characters/body types and different personalities n stuff. The drawing on the left was my first take but was looking at it more and I really felt I could push the look even more so that's what I pretty much did with the next sketch titled New School. Was pretty fun doing this seeing how much I could push the original drawing. Heck I think I could even push the 2nd drawing even more. But alas that is for another day.

Magic Mountain Man

I was sketching around and heard this song on the Radio that reminded me about of the commercial for Magic Mountain. The one with the old man who all of a sudden starts dancing. lol. If your familiar with the commercials then you know who I'm talking about and if your not familiar with it then check out Youtube I'm sure they have him there. SO in a nutshell I sketched these out and just placed them in a order that I thought kinda worked. Wasn't my intention to make it a sequential but hey I'll take it.
